Practicing Your Stitches Before You Decide to Use a Suture Kit

by | Sep 27, 2019 | Health

When you work in the medical field as a nurse, doctor, or physician’s assistant, then there is a good possibility that you’re going to have to use a suture kit. Even though kits are usually in a small sanitary package, you still need to keep a few tips in mind when working with the items that are inside. Make sure you practice all safety precautions, such as wearing gloves and a mask over your mouth to prevent any kind of contamination.

Practice

Before using suture needle sets in a healthcare setting, you need to practice as much as possible. Consider using a piece of fruit to practice how to make the proper stitches that will close the wound. Anything from peaches to oranges would be good to practice on if you’re unable to find something else that is similar to how the skin would feel. You could also practice on parts that you get from a butcher so that you get a better idea for the anatomy of the area you’re working with, such as a chicken leg or the foot of a pig.

Protection

When you’re using suture needle sets, you need to wear as much protection as possible. This is not only to keep you safe but to keep your patient safe as well. Sometimes, you might come into contact with fluids that could be contaminated with viruses. Wearing gloves, goggles, a mask, and a gown can protect you while stitching your patient’s wounds.

Use Proper Tools

Even though you’re stitching a wound, you shouldn’t use a common sewing needle. This is often larger than a medical needle that comes with the suture kit. It’s also not sanitized like one that you would find in a suture kit. If you don’t have access to the proper tools for practicing, then consider asking your employer or a school that offers nursing classes for the supplies that you need.
